Our stay didn’t get off to the best start. After a long drive up, we arrived at Lanefoot Farm, only for there to be no record of our booking. I was already tired and grumpy and, as I had paid in full upfront, I had expected everything to go a bit more smoothly.
As a result we ended up squeezed between two other pitches. Luckily our neighbours were lovely, but they can’t have been overjoyed to see us pitch up with our massive new tent and a toddler. Despite being closer to other tents than I would normally like, we still managed to have a lovely few days.
I picked Lanefoot mainly for the location, but also because we have discovered that we really do prefer smaller, more basic sites. They tend to be friendlier, and anyway the whole point is that you make your own fun! Finn certainly had a great time watching the free range (and very bold!) chickens and sheep and toddling up and down the field.
As long as there are toilets, showers (preferably free with plenty of hot water) and running water then I’m happy. We also tend to get a pitch with EHU these days as it makes life so much easier. Lanefoot had all of this, plus an indoor washing up room, which also housed maps and leaflets about the area. The reception had a small shop for basics.
The toilets and showers were in the old farm building, and although there weren’t many (two male and two female toilets and 3 shower cubicles) it wasn’t too busy. A bonus of camping with a toddler is that we tend to be up early so beat the queues. It was useful that the cubicles were big enough to accommodate all three of us, which makes it easier washing Finn. As I mentioned, the facilities were basic, but clean enough and the hot water flowed so I have no complaints.
Fires are allowed, however you need to use a container and wood supplied by the campsite.
Being the Lake District and peak season, this site wasn’t the cheapest. We’ve certainly paid less for better facilities. However, when you’ve got a view like this on your doorstep, it suddenly seems like a great deal!
I’d definitely like to return to Lanefoot, I’ll just make sure I confirm my booking before arriving next time!
