5 reasons I love Parkrun

This is a bit of a departure from my usual subject matter. However, as my blog is aimed at people who want to get out and about and perhaps be a little more active, I thought it’s not too off piste.

Up until a couple of years ago I was very much into my running. I ran at least 3 times a week, did many 10k races and even a half marathon, which I loved.

I then had what was meant to be a short break after the half, and didn’t run for another 2 and a half years. In my defence I was pregnant for some of that time, although for most of it I was just damn lazy. Then last Saturday, 6 months after giving birth, I decided to do my local parkrun. These are free, timed 5k races that take place across the country on a Saturday morning. They’re open to everyone, from serious runners to beginners, at mine there are often people running with dogs, buggies and children.

I’ve been back at the gym and swimming for a couple of months and done some walking, but (apart from a few minutes on a treadmill) I haven’t run at all. It could have been a mistake, but it was actually brilliant. As soon as I pulled on my neglected running shoes and left the house in my running gear to join another 310 like minded souls, I realised just how much I’ve missed it.

I highly recommend looking up your local Parkrun, here’s why I love it so much:

  1. It’s free-just register online first to get your barcode. Of course you are welcome to donate to this hard working organisation if you wish.
  2. Camaraderie. The biggest thing I missed about running is feeling part of something. At parkrun the friendly volunteers make a fantastically welcoming atmosphere. Perfect for those lacking confidence or needing some encouragement
  3. It’s on the doorstep-nearly literally for me! I live about a 2 minute walk from my local run, but there are 348 locations across Britain, and even some events overseas, so bound to be one near you!
  4. The fact that it is timed and your results are logged makes it easy to track your progress and set goals. My time this week was 33.28, a mere 8 and a half minutes slower than my PB-still I’ve got something to aim for now
  5. You earn your breakfast! After all that exertion on a Saturday morning, it makes your weekend fry-up all the more satisfying.

So will I be there this week? You bet I will, I’ve got 8 and a half minutes to shave off my time! What’s stopping you?!
