This camping weekend marked the debut of our new tent, the Hi-Gear Rock 4, and so was eagerly anticipated! (I’ll talk more about the tent when we’ve really tested it out-early indications are good).
Great Langdale is a National Trust campsite, and as such, is very well run and extremely picturesque. It’s a very relaxed, quiet site and perfectly situated for walking , climbing or more relaxing trips. We camped on the pre-booked field, and even though it was a busy Bank Holiday weekend, the pitches were adequately sized; even for our new, larger tent!
Great Langdale is a particularly scenic campsite
We stayed for three nights and the novelty of waking up to amazing views of the hills all around never wore off. Overall, the facilities at Great Langdale are very good. The shop is well stocked and the staff are always on hand for any help/advice needed. Also, a great bonus, the shop serves freshly baked bread, pastries and filter coffee. We treated ourselves on the last morning as it poured with rain and the thought of standing over a stove was not so appealing.
There are 2 toilet/washing blocks with showers, toilets, washing up rooms, laundry and drying rooms. There are no hairdryers, but plugs provided so you can bring your own. Unfortunately it seemed to be a struggle to provide a plentiful supply of hot water while we were there. I managed to get a couple of good showers, although Luke wasn’t so lucky, and even while I was showering I could hear other women complaining.
We tried a couple of the local pubs during our stay. The Stickle Barn is also National Trust owned and run, and although we didn’t eat, we did enjoy a couple of delicious ales in lovely surroundings. We also called in at the Old Dungeon Ghyll, as it has a good reputation for serving quality ales. Indeed, our drinks were fine, although the 20 mins+ wait to be served at the bar when there was only a handful of people ahead of us rather tainted our experience.
In summary, a great campsite ideally situated with great facilities, just wish there had been decent hot showers at all times.
